Brain Awareness Week is an international campaign coordinated by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, a non-profit organisation of over 200 leading neuroscientists including ten nobel laureates, to promote public understanding of neuroscience. This year marked the 13th annual Brain Awareness Week and 73 different countries participated, bringing activities, lectures and exhibitions to millions of people around the world.

Edinburgh Neuroscience, an ‘umbrella’ organisation which supports the neuroscience community within the University of Edinburgh, hosted workshops for 200 P7 school children as part of Brain Awareness Week, with funding from the European Dana Alliance for the Brain and The Royal Society. ‘How we view the brain and what the brain sees’ introduced children to the basic structure of the brain, brain imaging techniques and how the brain can be ‘fooled’ by illusions through a lively series of talks, hands-on activities and exhibits. “Our Brain Awareness week workshops were a huge success again this year with the children, teachers and Edinburgh Neuroscience helpers thoroughly enjoying themselves. The children loved the hands-on activities, especially seeing the human brain and asked loads of great questions” noted Dr Jane Haley, Edinburgh Neuroscience Administrator.
